Cummins

The thread you referenced is not really up to date. Cummins is providing better components now for engine rebuiilds that correct early problems with the ISX. Matter of fact, just got a flyer from my local Cummins shop regarding engine overhaul kits. They described how they parts are different, including newer piston composition. So, rebuilding a pre-egr ISX is not an issue.
There is nothing wrong with my current engine, except that it is an egr engine. I have the EGR unplugged now, which has given me a .8 mpg better fuel mileage and greatly improved used oil samples including lower wear metal numbers and obviously lower soot levels. But, when the time comes to rebuild the engine, I was wanting instead to rebuild a pre egr isx and replace this egr isx. I could also rebuild this one, and then unplug the egr as before, but why even have an egr, egr cooler anyway. Why not just go with the pre egr engine. Not trying to "convert" my egr isx to pre-egr like was mentioned in the thread you referenced. Not worth the time and trouble. Especially when I got virtually a pre-egr now by just unplugging the egr valve. I just want to avoid having an egr engine in the future. EGR coolers can still go out or leak even if the EGR is unplugged. By having a non egr ISX, that is less components to have to fiddle with.
